Goodwill school, established by the Presbyterian Board of Missions for Freedmen to educate former slaves in 1870, has fallen by the wayside. The Goodwill Educational and Historical Society (GEHS) now plans to reopen the school, which closed in 1960, as a community center. Damaged by Hurricane Hugo, this is no small feat, and has brought the community - including Salem Black River Presbyterian Church and Goodwill Presbyterian Church - together in support of this new mission. $250,000 has already been spent, $250,000-$350,000 remains to be spent in restoring the building.
