Twitter exploded yesterday as Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, director of the PC(USA) Office of Public Witness, was arrested for civil disobedience in the Capitol yesterday. He was joined by the Executive Director for Faith and Public Life, Jennifer Butler, and the former president of the National Council of Churches, Michael Livingston. Nelson said: "Our denomination cannot stand idly by and watch while the mandate of the gospel to love our neighbors is violated in the halls of Congress." This comes after Nelson and Stated Clerk Gradye Parsons met with congressional leadership to plead the case of the poor and disadvantaged as the possibility of indiscriminate budget cuts looms.
