Presbyterian Exam Committee Meets in Louisville

4/7/11

The Presbyterian Cooperative Committee on Examination met today in Louisville to discuss the current and future state of ordination exams. The big discussion, it seems, was moving exams online. Currently, students type exams and send in printed copies of their work. Moving exams online would involve increased use of anti-cheating software and open up the possibility of using profession testing centers such as those offered by Kaplan.  Other issues discussed include:

  • Whether "English is not my first language" counts as self-identification (which would disqualify an exam),
  • Advising CPMs to recommend retaking exams after 5 years (probably of inquiry/candidacy)
  • Rethinking exams as blessings, not barriers and breaking academic associations in favor of ministerial
  • Expanding the leadership on examination
  • Having exams in June and September/October
It's hard to tell what decisions were made at this point and which remain to be made. Certainly more clarity will come as things develop. [Margaret Aymer Oget via Twitter]
