A local newspaper reported today that Stockton Presbytery has evicted 8-10 homeless people living on the property of Sierra Presbyterian Church. The homeless community felt traumatized by the event, and fencing was put up after the eviction to keep people out. Why would a presbytery step in to do something like this? Because Sierra Presbyterian Church, which focused its mission efforts on the homeless, closed its doors earlier this year. Its homeless ministry continues separately, but without the facility integral to its ministry. A clear example of the damage done by financial hardships - both to the church and to the poor.
